A symbol of power and a unit of value, the lure of gold has shaped civilisations since ancient times. Aurum juxtaposes today’s extraction and production processes against a tangled history revealing a story of obsession and the power of a single material to transform societies. The demand for gold continues to rise sharply, driven by global instability and fluctuating economies.&nbsp; As old goldfields are reignited and new open pits spread through the landscape, the devastating ecological cost of extraction must be calculated on a planetary scale. Filmed on Kuwarra Country and Wajuk Country (Western Australia) as well as Wathaurong Country (Victoria), we pay our respects to the traditional owners of the lands, and acknowledge the significant impact incurred through two centuries of gold extraction. Inscribed on the coin is the unique contract address linked to a virtual NFT marketplace, where an edition of Aurum has been minted.&nbsp; An NFT (Non Fungible Token) attaches a unique code to a digital artwork using blockchain algorithms making it collectible and scarce.&nbsp; These decentralised crypto networks promise new models of production and trade, and with that new forms of speculation and investment. Designers, artists and guest speakers examine and extrapolate Victoria’s cultural narratives through an analysis of the material history of basalt within the framework of deep time. From shaping the Victorian landscape to in-turn being reshaped by humans, basalt transforms into foundations, iconic buildings and streets of our urban centres in the form of bluestone. It is critical that we understand bluestone not only as relic, as symbol, as commodity, but as lava flow, geographic modifier and as a definitive carrier of Indigenous and colonial stories.
